Our tips for choosing your MAMA HANGS carrier model.
Are you expecting a baby or are you new parents?
If you're interested in physiological carrying and want to learn more, or if you're wondering which product to choose for carrying your baby, discover the key elements to make your decision.
Why carry my baby?
Carrying is an ancient practice that was set aside for a few decades by Western populations in favor of strollers. The return to more natural and child-centered parenting methods has brought it back into the spotlight.
What are the benefits of keeping your newborn close?
Benefits of physiological carrying for the baby:
- Promotes emotional bonding: Physical closeness releases oxytocin, the attachment hormone.
- Regulates the baby’s nervous system: The rhythm, warmth, and smells provide comfort and reassurance.
- Facilitates digestion: The vertical position aids in digestion.
- Stimulates muscle tone and balance: Helps in the development of strength and coordination.
- Supports harmonious growth: Encourages proper development of hips and spine.
Advantages for parents:
- Supports breastfeeding: Stimulates lactation and facilitates nursing.
- Meets the baby’s needs quickly and appropriately: Provides confidence in responding to the baby’s needs.
Is babywearing suitable for everyone?
Newborns can be worn from birth. In the case of prematurity, consult a healthcare professional for approval. There is no age limit for carrying a child.
Check the weight compatibility with the chosen model.
It is especially beneficial for:
- Babies with digestive issues: reflux, colic
- Little ones who have trouble self-soothing
- Children with developmental delays
- Infants with congenital hip dislocation
My baby doesn’t like being worn; is that normal?
Babywearing is beneficial for all children. If your infant doesn’t enjoy it, cries, or has trouble curling up in the carrier because of extension, it’s worth discussing with a professional. A manual therapist (osteopath, chiropractor) can identify if any tensions are causing this issue.
Who can carry the baby?
A baby can be carried by both mom and dad. It’s a way for the father to build a strong bond with the child and to support his partner, especially if she is breastfeeding.
Depending on your postpartum situation (cesarean scar, perineum), check with your midwife or gynecologist if there are any contraindications.
Babywearing doesn’t require a specific physical condition, but you will find that your endurance improves over time!
Another adult (grandparents, nanny) can also use a carrier with your infant if you wish.
However, it is not recommended for another child to carry the baby.
When to wear your baby?
Babywearing fits multiple situations:
- As a mode of transport, to drop off your child at daycare or with the nanny.
- For walks on any terrain, ensuring you are always comfortable in your effort.
- For the baby’s naps; they fall asleep peacefully while you keep your hands free for other tasks.
- To comfort your child if they are in pain or feverish.
- Simply for the pleasure of being close!
The safety rules to follow when carrying your baby
Up to 6 months, carry your baby in the front position.
- Always ensure that their nose and mouth are clear.
- Ensure proper physiological positioning (our tutorials are here to guide you):
- Seated/squatting
- Hips in retroversion
- Rounded back
- Head and trunk aligned
- Hands within reach of the mouth
- No footrests
- Adjust the baby’s clothing according to the weather: the carrier acts as a layer of clothing. If it’s sunny, protect your child’s head. You can match our baby hat with your carrier system.
- Do not carry your child while sleeping.
- Carrying is prohibited in a motor vehicle: a car seat is essential for the baby.
- Avoid engaging in sports activities while carrying.
- Do not cook with your baby on you.
